Virginia Voter Registration

Can I register to vote in Virginia?
Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen, your home is in Virginia, and you are 18 or older. If you will be 18 by the next general election, you can register when you are 17. You must first have your voting rights restored if you have been convicted of a felony, or if you have been declared mentally incapacitated by a circuit court.

When can I register?
You can register at any time. To vote in a general or primary election, you must register at least 29 days prior to the election. To vote most special elections, you must register at least 13 days before the election.

Where can I register?
You can register at your local Office of Voter Registration, at specially-scheduled registration sites, at the Department of Motor Vehicles, or at many other local and state social service agencies.

Can I register by mail?
Yes, you can register by mailing in the postcard registration application, available at most public libraries and information centers or by downloading below. Call or email your local Office of Voter Registration for information on where applications are available in your community or to have an application mailed to you.

Using Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can now pull up the Virginia Voter Registration Application, fill it out directly, print it, sign it, and mail it to your local Office of Voter Registration.

If you are not a Virginia resident, you can download the National Registration Application from the Election Assistance Commission website. This form is also available in Spanish.

Note: Both of these files are PDF files, which require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print them. If you do not have Acrobat Reader installed, you can install it for free by clicking the following icon.

What information do I need to register?
You must give under oath your full legal name and current home address, your social security number, and the address where you were last registered to vote, if any.

Do I have to state my political party preference?
No, Virginia does not have registration by political party.

Do I have to register for each election?
No, your registration remains valid unless you change your address.

What should I do if I change my name or address after I register?
If you have moved within your local Virginia jurisdiction or changed your name, you must notify your local Office of Voter Registration of your new address or name, in writing. Or, stop by your Office of Voter Registration or any registration site and complete a new application form. Voters already registered in Virginia who move to another Virginia jurisdiction must complete a new application form to update their address.

Once you complete the new application, or the registrar receives notice of your address or name change, you will be sent a new registration card with your new polling place information.

If you move outside of Virginia, you are no longer eligible to vote in Virginia, and you must register to vote in your new state.

Can I transfer my registration from another state to Virginia?
No, you must register to vote in Virginia, and your previous registration will be canceled.
